This course on Mixed Movements explores the protection challenges faced by people on the move in mixed movement contexts and analysis possible opportunities and solutions provided by a route-based approach. This approach promotes coordinated, rights-based responses to strengthen protection along key migration routes and offer safe, regular alternatives to dangerous journeys. The interactive online course introduces participants to foundational concepts, including the profiles and diverse needs of people on the move, the applicable legal and policy frameworks, and the key actors involved in managing mixed movements. Guided by the six pillars of the route-based approach, the course highlights the importance of protection-sensitive entry systems, strong asylum systems, and effective case management to uphold the rights and safety of refugees and migrants. It also examines the specific risks people on the move may face along land and sea routes – such as trafficking, smuggling, and immigration detention – and how these can be addressed through coordinated responses at every stage along the routes. Finally, participants will explore the importance of safe and regular pathways and long-term solutions through the sharing of good practices by expert facilitators and fellow participants.
